Esfandiari Falls Short In No-Limit Hold'em Shootout At WSOP

The poker professionals have been in Las Vegas for nearly the entire World Series of Poker this year, and they have made their presence felt at the tables. The latest pro to make a deep run through a tournament was Antonio Esfandiari, who fell just short of winning a No-Limit Hold'em Shootout event this week.

Esfandiari played strongly throughout the tournament, coming up with big hand after big hand. In the end, Esfandiari ran into two players who simply had a little more in the tank. Craig McCorkell finished in first place, while Jeremiah Fitzpatrick closed the tournament as the runner-up.

For his third place finish, Esfandiari took home $151,613. McCorkell and Fitzpatrick claimed $368,593 and $228,261, respectively. Justin Bonomo, another well known pro cashed in the event, finishing in 18th place. Almost 600 players entered the tournament, with the top 60 at least tripling their $3,000 buy-in.

Phil Ivey has been having one of the best runs of any player at the WSOP this year, and he continued that run this week. Ivey placed eighth in Event #35, a Mixed Hold'em tournament. Ivey was in position to make a run at the gold bracelet, but his chip stack was down heading into the final table. He was able to survive and move up a few places, eventually busting out in eighth. Chris Tryba won the event.

In ongoing action, Event #38, a No-Limit Hold'em tournament is down to the final three players. Theo Tran is trying to wrestle the chip lead away from Dung Nguyen, while Bahman Jahanguiri tries to stay alive in third place. Nguyen has a commanding chip lead over both challengers. The $1,500 buy-in event has a prize pool of over $3 million.

The $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament is down to the final 33 players, and a familiar face is at the top of the chip stacks. Sammy Farha is the chip leader, but he is being chased by some big-name pros including Jason Mercier and Allen Cunningham. The tournament has over $2.7 million in the prize pool, with the winner taking home a guaranteed $661,000.
