Vikings New Stadium On Last Legs With Gambling Proposal

The future of the Minnesota Vikings' existence in the state has been directly tied to gambling expansion for the past year. This week, lawmakers will take one final swing in this session to pass a bill that would expand gambling while also dedicating funds for a new stadium.

The House Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee passed the bill this week that would help fund the stadium. The legislation, however, is a massive gambling expansion bill, and critics believe there is little chance of such a bill passing this session. That would put the future of the Vikings in jeopardy.

"If they don't get this deal done soon, it is likely that the owner (Ziggy Hood) starts to look at his options," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "Those options most likely include Los Angeles, and if it gets to that point, it may become too late to save the team in Minnesota."

Fans have been behind passing legislation that would bring casinos to the state. The casinos would bring hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue, and that revenue would then go towards financing a new stadium for the Vikings. With the clock ticking, fans are starting to get antsy.

"I don't care how they do it, they just have to figure something out to keep the Vikings here," said Paul Blassard, a Vikings fan for the past Thirty-two years. "This team was here when I was born, and I want them to be here when I die. I can't even believe we are this close to losing the team."

The stadium is not completely reliant on the money from the state, but enough of the funding is needed from the state to stall any stadium deals. The city and private funding would make up the other two-thirds of how the stadium would be built. Currently, Minnesota is playing in the Metrodome, but their lease has run out and they have already said they will not renew the lease.
