　　Green fields that once collected stray golf balls in North Las Vegas have been dry and vacant for years. But soon, they will host participants in games of war, armed with paint.

　　Chris England plans to open Vegas Xtreme Paintball this weekend following a yearlong process of turning the dilapidated Jupiter Golf Center at 70 W. Craig Road into a three-field paintball park.

　　England, an officer at Nellis Air Force Base, presented a business plan to the center’s owner last year.

　　“Everyday I go home, I drive right by this great place which was Jupiter Golf, and I look at it, and I’m like, wow, this would make an awesome paintball field,” he said.

　　After a successful sales pitch to Jupiter Golf Co., finding an investor and signing on energy drink maker Monster as a sponsor, England started building what he says will be a state-of-the-art paintball facility.

　　With city approval, England began working to fix the place up. He spent the first year of his five-year lease renovating a 7,500 square-foot building that houses an arcade and building the three outdoor fields, one of which will feature a “three-sided castle” complete with towers.

　　England said volunteer help played a big role, with people excited about the paintball field offering to help for free. Once the business is up and running, he said, he hopes to hire five full-time employees.

　　Funding for the project came from an investor who put up $50,000, while England invested $75,000.

　　“The few places that we have to play for paintball are not good,” said England, who previously owned a paintball field in Georgia.

　　The facility will host tournaments, parties and provide instruction on the sport. Besides the arcade, it will also have a miniature golf course that will open in the summer.

　　An all-day pass without equipment rental will be $25. The center will offer players .50 caliber markers as well as other equipment like masks.

　　Vegas Xtreme Paintball will be open to players ages 10 and up.

　　“People who play paintball will find a place to play; a lot of them play out in the desert, and that’s not safe,” England said.

　　Vegas Xtreme Paintball opens at 9 a.m. Saturday and will hold a grand opening Feb. 3 with a three-man tournament.
