　　When people talk about casino safety, they usually talk about betting strategy, money management, playing the games with the best odds, avoiding side bets and other such things. Those are important, but there is another type of casino safety that you should keep in mind when you go out for a night of gambling.

　　This morning, Chicago police responded to the alleged assault of a 62-year-old Chinese immigrant who had won more than $10,000 at an Indiana casino. Two armed men assaulted him and stole his money, making off with cash and casino chips. The victim’s son, William Chan, said that he believes the robbers followed his father home from the casino. “Stuff like this seems to be happening more than enough times in Chinatown,” he says. Chan says that many robbers prey on Chinese immigrants who visit the casinos to rob them of their winnings. His father was wounded but not seriously injured.

　　Chan says that type of crime is common in Chinatown, but it happens elsewhere as well. The inside of a casino is pretty safe because of the high level of security, including staff on the floor and cameras covering every inch of the casino. Once you get outside the casino, though, you’re alone on the street and need to take care of yourself. Many cities have a police presence outside the casinos to discourage that kind of crime. The police won’t follow you all the way home, though. For that reason, you need to take your own precautions. If possible, don’t go home from the casino alone. Be aware of your surroundings and try to notice suspicious behavior. Be extra careful if you walk home or take public transit. Carrying something for defense, such as pepper spray, is also a good idea. The bottom line is that when you leave the casino, you are associated with money. Thieves will assume that you either won money or have enough money that you could afford to lose it at the casino. Because of that, you will be a target, which means you have to be cautious.
