Online poker has faced much scrutiny from “outsiders” over the years, many of which were questioning the legality of the game. The situation the online gambling industry is in since April didn’t do much to help. For those of you who aren’t up to date with the latest online poker news,  back in April the United States Department of Justice turned up the heat and shut down several of the largest online poker rooms in the country. Seizures were made, the domain names were even seized for a couple of days, and one of the sites (Full Tilt Poker) is still suffering, as it’s closed for business for the past months.

Ever since then, online poker has been just about unreachable from within the United States, despite many attempts to regulate the industry, as reported by the gambling news, and have it make the state some money from taxes, instead of banning it altogether.

One of the most notable attempts to legalize online poker in the United States came just a few days ago, when the Subcommitte on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade held an open hearing in order to discuss the potential online poker law. Many famous names from the industry took part in the hearing, including Al D’Amato, one of the most active supporters of the cause, and founder of one of the Poker Players Alliance, a group that lobbies for the legalization of the game.

Six panel members testified in front of the subcommittee, and five of them expressed their desire for online poker to be legalized. Ernest Stevens, the chairman of the NIGA (National Indian Gambling Association) was the only one who opposed the law, as he feared that the new sport wouldn’t allow much profit to reach tribal governments.

Unlike other such hearings, this one wasn’t focused primarily on the legality and morality of online gambling (or gambling in general)。 The hearing revolved, instead, around consumer protection.

Overall, the whole hearing was set under a positive tone, with many benefits to an online gambling legislation being highlighted. And these benefits are quite notable – for instance, the American online gambling public generates profits of up to $6 billion each year.
